The local main town of Altagracia province, Higüey is renowned for its modern basilica with its 69-metre soaring arch, visible for miles around, and dedicated to Our Lady of Altagracia, the patron saint of Dominicans. Famously visited by Pope John Paul II during his visit to the island in 1992 for the commemoration of the 500th anniversary of the arrival of Christopher Columbus.

Once there, you will also visit the colonial-style San Dionisio church, dating back more than 500 years. Then, The Basilica of La Altagracia church, only inaugurated in 1971 but featuring an altar painting of the Virgin Mary dating from the 16th century.
It is one of the most important religious sites in the country and January 21st is the La Altagracia Day, when pilgrims, particularly, flock here.
